#NotAtPDC

For those of us developers addicted to our computers 24/7 and unlucky enough not to have made it to Microsoft PDC 2008 the mood can still be exciting as we do our best to follow the event online and on Twitter. Its really great that Microsoft is making all the sessions available online for free through Channel9 as the week goes on (yes all sessions not just the Keynotes!), this really makes it possible to “be there” when the time or money doesn't let you visit California. If you didn’t even know that the sessions are being posted online, well...

Quake ported to Silverlight 2!

Today I had one of those moments when while working I opened some random link from a Twitter post that seemed interesting. What I saw literally blew me away. The screenshot above shows a clip from a Channel9 video posted on Adam Kinneys blog, yes you’re seeing the original Quake but what's really impressive is that its running inside a browser using Silverlight 2! Wow, thats just freaking cool. So the credit here goes to Julien Frelat, a 31-year old French developer with experience in game development who ported the Quake engine to C# and...

Dell 9 Mini to 2gigs of Memory

I recently purchased a DELL 9 Mini with the maximum specs running Windows XP as my vacation/couch PC. So far I am very happy with it but as with any geek I want to find a way to push its performance higher. Memory Upgrade The most obvious upgrade to this machine is a memory upgrade and is the simplest to do. After doing some research I determined that the following memory module (ordered from Crucial) should do the trick: 2GB, 200-pin SODIMM, DDR2 PC2-5300 memory module (Part #CT25664AC667). I quickly ordered the memory for...

Enterprise Library 4.0: Error installing Source / Samples

Today while installing Enterprise Library 4.0 on my Windows 2008 “desktop” machine I received the following error towards the end of the installation: “The system administrator has set policies to prevent this installation” After clicking OK to acknowledge this error the prompt closes and the installation completes successfully. I quickly looked to see what had happened and it seems everything installs except for the Source and Samples. I then tried to run the Enterprise Library 4.0 - May 2008 - Source Code.msi file again (this is what fails and can be found in C:\Program Files\Microsoft Enterprise...

Live.com – Yes Microsoft Has a Search Engine

Admit it, you don’t use Live.com as your search engine, instead you “Google”. I tend to be a very honest person and admit I didn’t use it much either until fairly recently. I never avoided any search engine because I was a Google fanatic but I simply wanted what everyone else did, the best results. When I did try Live.com again I noticed something fairly interesting, the results improved, a lot! I now find almost no difference between the search results of Live.com VS. Google.com. Background Images = Some amazing shots Another big change that...

Microsoft Marketplace and Free Software List

During my time at Web 2.0 conference someone had brought up the lack of a Microsoft store for its products. I had the same thought a while ago but was corrected by one of my colleagues that we in fact do have a store that is just poorly advertised. http://www.windowsmarketplace.com/ Unfortunately I totally forgot the URL and actually had a real hard time trying to find this link until today. I found it thanks to a Microsoft blog that talks mostly about our free software offerings but also mentions the store. Free Software...
